South Mississippi’s love affair with guns grows

In Mississippi, we like to hunt. We like to shoot. We like to visit gun ranges.

In short, we love our guns. They are part of the fabric of South Mississippi life.

The numbers bear that out.

More than 312,000 Mississippians each year participate in recreational shooting, one trade group says. A federal agency reports 220,266 hunting licenses were issued in Mississippi in 2013. And one South Mississippi gun and pawn shop is among the nation’s leaders in gun sales.

In many South Mississippi families, hunting and shooting guns or rifles is a rite of passage for young adults. But statistics indicate there may be fewer people hunting and more people target shooting.
