Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Is Mayors’ group trying to deflect attention by attacking NRA?

Is the anti-gun Mayors Against Illegal Guns trying to deflect attention from last week’s embarrassing launch of Gun Owners Against Illegal Mayors by calling a press conference today to attack the National Rifle Association, which had nothing to do with the new organization?

That’s a question worth asking, now that MAIG held a telephone press conference at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning to discuss a new “bipartisan poll” that purports to show how the NRA is something of a paper tiger because candidates it backed did poorly in the election.

It’s a question we did not have the opportunity to ask. At least, so far.

Only two journalists asked questions and Examiner was one of them. There were no further questions. After this column’s question was answered – about the disparity between MAIG’s claim that more people support gun law reforms while gun sales are going through the proverbial roof – the press conference ended. We did not have the opportunity to ask about the “Illegal Mayors’” advertisement.

One might think this would have been a major press event with lots of attention, due to the mainstream press’ long standing willingness to beat up on the NRA.

According to an e-mail this column received early Friday from the media group organizing the event, “The Center for American Progress Action Fund will host a press call tomorrow to release the findings of a new bipartisan poll by Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The poll finds that despite spending nearly $12 million this election season, the National Rifle Association was not able to move the needle this November because more voters trust President Barack Obama on guns and support gun-law reforms.

“Republican polling firm Chesapeake Beach Consulting and Democratic polling firm Momentum Analysis surveyed 500 people in Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia who voted in the 2012 presidential election,” the message noted, “and they found that the gun lobby’s spending was ineffective, as was recently revealed by the Sunlight Foundation and Media Matters.”

Did the Mayors enlighten us about the skyrocketing gun sales, as reported here? MAIG Director Mark Glaze essentially suggested this is a mirage, that fewer households have guns, and that gun sales are spurred by NRA-generated paranoia about the impending loss of gun rights.
