SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The National Rifle Association donated $5,000 toward Republican Rob Astorino today, one day after he debated Gov. Andrew Cuomo and two other candidates.

It’s the first donation from the national gun-rights group toward Astorino, who has been trailing Cuomo by double-digits in public polls. The state arm of the NRA has donated $1,000, according to state elections records.

Today’s money from the NRA’s Victory Fund comes as Astorino trails Cuomo in fundraising by about 1 to 10. The state and national gun groups say they will also help Astorino with phone banks and mailers as the Nov. 4 elections near.
