TSA sees increase in guns over holidays

It’s the time of year when holiday travel picks up, airports bustle and transportation security officers tend to find more guns at the checkpoint, particularly in Fort Lauderdale.

“People have a lot on their minds, especially around the holidays,” said Sari Koshetz, spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration.

The TSA intercepted four guns at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in the last week. During the Thanksgiving travel week, a man flying to Santo Domingo was caught with a .45-caliber Sig Sauer loaded with eight rounds. A man flying to Dallas was spotted with a .380-caliber Bersa loaded with five rounds. Neither traveler made his flight.

On Sunday, a woman not planning to fly but escorting a minor was caught with a Ruger loaded with one round in the chamber. On Monday, a passenger booked to New York was caught with a .380-caliber Bersa with 15 rounds.

Koshetz said so far this year 36 guns have been found at the Fort Lauderdale airport, more than twice the 15 firearms apiece caught at the Palm Beach and Miami international airports.

“Last year we intercepted an average of two guns per month at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport; this year it is three a month,” she said. “We have sat down with law enforcement to analyze the trend, but no common denominator pops out.”
