Target Practice

Barb Bass spreads the paper target wide and stands back, then gazes at the “Crazy Bones” target which strikes a menacing pose. Dozens of tiny tears punctuate the paper, including one around its upper jaw.

“It’s like anything, if you don’t use it you’ll lose it,” she later says, as she wrap up a target shooting session at the gun range at Bob’s Gun Shop in Norfolk. “I think people who want to carry a gun should get out and practice.” Accompanying Barb is her husband, Joe Bass, and a friend, Kelley Rea. The three come out about once a month to keep their shooting skills sharp. This time they shot for about an hour, shooting around 250 rounds total.

“I think people should be responsible for themselves,” says Barb, who was shooting a Smith and Wesson Model 66 revolver. For Barb, shooting is almost second nature, saying, “I grew up on a farm and grew up shooting my daddy’s shotgun.”

The three share the common interest in gun ownership – that personal protection is rooted with practice. Firing their weapons helps ensure proper use, just in case they’ll need to use it. “People think that taking away guns is going to make people safer, but I don’t think that’s the case,” says Barb.

Her husband Joe shares the same sentiment. ““The main things is trying to stay alive. When something bad happens you’re on your own.”
