Weatherby Adding new ‘Back Country’ Rifles to Vanguard Series 2

by Max Slowik , Guns.com  |  published on March 17, 2013

After unveiling it at SHOT Show earlier this year, Weatherby is officially launching the new “Back Country” lightweight bolt-action hunting rifle.

The Back Country is functionally similar to most of the Vandguard Series 2 rifles, particularly in terms of accuracy. With its 24-inch fluted cold hammer-forged barrel, the Back Country comes with Weatherby’s sub-MOA guarantee.

Designed for hunters who expect to do a lot of hiking, the Back Country’s main draw is not being a burden; it weighs just 6.75 pounds. Chambered in .240, .257 and 300 Weatherby Magnum, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield and .300 Winchester Magnum, the Back Country comes in options suitable for most types of North American game.

In .240, .270 and .30-06 the Back Country has an internal magazine capacity of 5+1 and in the larger-cased .257 and .300 calibers a capacity of 3+1.

All models of Back Country come with the same, wispily-mottled silver-on-black synthetic stock, which gives the simple Monte Carlo stock an organic touch without turning to any specific camo pattern that may look good in one place or season but stick out in another. The stock is fitted with a recoil pad by Pachmayr to deal with the powerful combination of hard-hitting cartridges fired from a lightweight rifle.

The steel portions of the rifle are given a Tactical Grey Cerakote finish.
