NRA runs new TV ad supporting Kelly Ayotte

The National Rifle Association is airing a new television advertisement in support of Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) as she faces criticism in at least two other ads on her position on new proposed gun laws.

“Kelly Ayotte voted for a bipartisan plan to make background checks more effective … to reform our broken mental health system … for more resources to prosecute criminals who use guns. Kelly Ayotte stands with prosecutors and police for New Hampshire values,” the ad’s announcer says.

The NRA spot will air this week on WMUR-TV, the state’s only commercial broadcast TV station at a cost of $25,000, a modest ad buy suggesting it won’t air in heavy rotation. It uses footage from another ad airing in New Hampshire, paid for by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, that criticizes Ayotte for voting against a bipartisan proposal that would have expanded the national gun background check program to include most commercial firearms sales.

Americans for Responsible Solutions, a group founded by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), is also airing an ad in the state critical of Ayotte’s vote.
