right to carry

Right to bear arms is what it says

I’m a gunsmith, born and raised in Germantown. I build, service and repair firearms. I have been exposed to hundreds upon hundreds of lawful gun owners who are upstanding citizens who handle their firearms safely and respectfully. It is important to understand that law-abiding gun owners are not a threat to public safety.

By and large, over 99 percent of people who purchase guns lawfully will never use them for ill purposes. I am proud to work in a thriving industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people across the country, and even here in Maryland. There are numerous gun stores, gunsmith shops and manufacturers in this state.

I understand that after the shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., people across the country and our state are calling for “meaningful action” to prevent other such disasters. First, I would like to point out an example of why gun laws have failed to stop carnage in our own state, much like they failed in Connecticut.

Despite Maryland and federal gun laws, the Washington, D.C., snipers were able to terrorize and kill residents in Maryland and the D.C. area in 2002. I was a senior in high school at the time, and I remember how the teachers at school taped paper to the windows and canceled sporting events to limit the exposure of students to danger.

I knew that bullets can penetrate glass and that I’d have to leave school every day, so I was still vulnerable no matter where I was. It was quite obvious to me that no law on Earth could have stopped them from doing what they did. The Maryland State Police, who carry firearms, were the only ones able to stop them.

Secondly, preventing law-abiding citizens from owning rifles that appear frightening to people who do not understand firearms will do little-to-nothing in the way of stopping crime since most gun crimes are committed with handguns.
