Morris County officials collected 600 guns — including 15 illegal assault weapons — with a no-questions-asked purchase program over the weekend.

“I am extremely pleased with the results of the Gun Buyback Amnesty Program,” acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp said in a statement released by his office. “A great deal of effort went into this event. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and its partners took 600 potentially dangerous firearms off the streets of Morris County.”

In all, the program paid out $49,600 for the guns, the prosecutor’s office said. Funds were provided by the state Attorney General’s Office, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Park Police and Morris County CrimeStoppers.

“I would personally like to thank Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa for his leadership and support with regard to our program,” Knapp said. “The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and our partners are extremely gratified that the Attorney General has taken such an interest in this issue.”

The buyback program took place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The first day of collections was at St. Paul Inside the Walls in Madison. The second was at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown.

Under the program, the guns were sold on a walk-in basis and with no questions asked. Participants could sell up to three weapons. Law enforcement and licensed firearms dealers were not eligible to participate.
