Election, visitors trigger Lee County FL gun sales

Whether you credit it to the presidential election or the season — holiday and tourist — Lee County gun sellers agree on one thing: sales are notably up.

“We’ve definitely had an increase lately,” said John Dezendorf, manager at Fowler Firearms & Gun Range on Fowler Street in Fort Myers.

“Anytime a Democrat wins the election, people buy more guns,” largely out of concern tighter gun control laws might pass in the future. “But it’s also because our snowbirds are coming, and they buy guns, too. More people, more sales.”

Brian Waldron, owner at Gun R Us on Broadway in Fort Myers, agreed, saying the increase has been remarkable the last eight months, as the election neared and more people focused on the possibility guns could be harder to obtain in the future.

Like other businesses, he declined to give exact figures, saying it’s not a 50 percent increase, “but it has increased quite a bit.”

“It’s been that way all over the country,” he said, noting the demand for assault weapons has been so high a factory backlog developed.
