Police searched for a man in north Charlotte who they said tried to kick his way into a detective’s home.

Investigators told Channel 9 the detective shot at the intruder and scared him off.

Police responded to the scene around 1 a.m. for a breaking and entering on Belmar Place Road. The wife of the off-duty officer heard something and alerted her husband, police said.

When the officer went downstairs he apparently saw someone trying to break in through the back of the house, police said.

The officer fired his personal weapon and the suspect ran off, detectives said.

Both CMPD homicide detectives and internal affairs division were investigating.
