Houston Robbery

A gunman rushed into a gas station in northeast Houston Friday afternoon and ordered everyone inside to hit the ground. Everyone followed orders — except the store clerk who pulled out his own weapon.

Houston police were called to King’s Food Store around 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Officials said the suspect entered the store when several customers were present and demanded money.

KHOU 11 News spoke with the wife of the clerk who shot the suspect. She said he did so for his own safety and for the safety of his customers.

“My husband was in there working and the guy came in there with a gun and made everybody lay down on the floor…and he had to shoot him,” said Elsie Alwardat, the clerk’s wife. “He was protecting himself and protecting his customers in there.”

The store was fitted with surveillance cameras, and police are looking over the video.

The clerk was detained at the store for questioning.

The suspect was transported to Ben Taub Hospital.
