Poll: Gun Owners Like ‘Guns Everywhere’ Law; Others Don’t

Americans who don’t own guns don’t like the idea of laws that expand the public spaces in which people can carry guns, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Annenberg poll.

The survey found 73% of non-gun owners oppose laws like Georgia’s “guns everywhere” provision, which allowed licensed gun owners to carry firearms into churches and bars unless explicitly prohibited. The law also allows guns to be carried into unsecured areas of airports, government buildings and college and school campuses.

The law, which went into effect July 1, is opposed by 58% of the general population, the poll found, including 66% of people who live in urban settings, 54% of suburbanites and 52% of people who live in small towns or rural areas.

Gun owners – who the poll determined account for 45% of the population – and men over 50 years old were the only demographics provided in the poll results that said they were in favor of the Georgia law. People at all income levels, all age brackets and at each level of education had majorities against the law. Three-quarters of black people oppose the Georgia law, 62% of Hispanics and 54% of white people said they were against it.Gun control organizations have long touted polls – nationally and state-by-state – that show a majority of Americans support their positions. But that has rarely translated into legislative success.
